They make your heart pound. They make your stomach churn. Love them or hate them, you can\u2019t deny that it\u2019s difficult to look away when people jump, dive or fly into danger. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>What drives people to do extreme sports? Why are they so popular? Are they becoming too\u00a0dangerous?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As a rule of thumb, most people would say that extreme sports have to have some level of risk to them, whether that is due to the surrounding climate or the activity itself. A lot of the people who participate in extreme sports usually do it alone (maybe with a helper depending on the sport) and are typically highly skilled and trained in their chosen field. Some examples of extreme sports are free diving, cave diving, free soloing canyoning, BASE jumping and bungee jumping. When many people think of\u00a0extreme\u00a0sports, their mind jumps\u00a0to\u00a0the\u00a0death rate.\u00a0However, is this association based in reality?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><b>BASE Jumping<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Despite\u00a0extreme\u00a0sports requiring an element of risk, not all\u00a0extreme\u00a0sports are equally hazardous.\u00a0BASE jumping is regarded by many as the deadliest\u00a0extreme\u00a0sport. But\u00a0what\u00a0actually\u00a0is it and why is it considered that way?\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>BASE jumping\u00a0is\u00a0similar to\u00a0skydiving,\u00a0albeit from a fixed location\u00a0(BASE)\u00a0namely\u00a0Buildings, Antennas, Spans (bridges),\u00a0and Earth\u00a0(Cliffs).\u00a0It is\u00a0usually considered more dangerous than \u2018regular\u2019\u00a0skydiving as\u00a0BASE jumping is done at a shorter distance. This means there is\u00a0much\u00a0less\u00a0margin\u00a0for error, which in this case could be life or death.\u00a0Faulty\u00a0or broken\u00a0equipment is\u00a0also\u00a0possibly responsible\u00a0for some deaths, so it is recommended that if you want to do\u00a0extreme\u00a0sports, you\u00a0should use\u00a0high quality\u00a0equipment, that is\u00a0maintained\u00a0regularly.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/theview.boltonschool.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/jump.jpg\" title=\"jump\" alt=\"jump\"><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/theview.boltonschool.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/climbing.jpg\" title=\"climbing\" alt=\"climbing\"><\/p>\n<p><b>Mountain Climbing:<\/b>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Another\u00a0risky\u00a0sport is mountain climbing, which\u00a0depends on a variety of factors like the climate or the height\u00a0and slope\u00a0of the mountain.\u00a0The world\u2019s 10th largest\u00a0mountain, Annapurna, Nepal\u00a0has a mortality\u00a0rate of around 30%\u00a0due to its\u00a0volatile weather and devastating\u00a0avalanches.\u00a0As well as this, the second highest mountain\u00a0which is\u00a0K2,\u00a0in\u00a0Pakistan\u00a0is infamous for having\u00a0an\u00a0approximate\u00a023% death rate.\u00a0This is mostly\u00a0due to its remote location,\u00a0which\u00a0means that rescuers struggle to\u00a0help\u00a0people\u00a0in emergencies.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It\u00a0should be noted that,\u00a0some non-extreme sports can also lead\u00a0to\u00a0fatal wounds\u00a0and severe, permanent injuries.\u00a0For example,\u00a0boxing\u00a0could lead to participants getting\u00a0brain injuries,\u00a0concussions,\u00a0and\u00a0CTE (Chronic\u00a0Traumatic Encephalopathy) or even death\u00a0in some cases.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Many of you\u00a0may be\u00a0wondering, why do people do\u00a0extreme\u00a0sports? What drives them to potentially risk their lives every time they take part? Most people may assume that people who enjoy\u00a0extreme\u00a0sports are \u201cadrenaline junkies\u2019\u2019. Adrenaline junkies are people who crave the rush of adrenaline that comes when they engage with the dangerous activities. However, this is not always the case. For many people,\u00a0extreme\u00a0sports provide people with a break from the mundanity of life.\u00a0While for\u00a0others, doing\u00a0extreme\u00a0sports might be part of their routine.\u00a0Doing\u00a0extreme\u00a0activities might be a goal for them, like climbing a mountain.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Bearing this in mind, I asked Aster Bird (a climbing enthusiast) what they thought about extreme sports.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Interview with Aster Bird:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Bearing this in mind, I asked Aster Bird (a climbing enthusiast) what they thought about extreme sports.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Q: Why do you do extreme sports? \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A:\u00a0I do it for fun and to relax, as\u00a0I\u00a0think of climbing as a puzzle with techniques to move my body and see how to\u00a0grasp\u00a0holds\u00a0[specialised, artificial\u00a0rock\u00a0pieces,\u00a0that are attached to a wall]\u00a0in\u00a0different ways.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Q:\u00a0How do you do extreme sports\u00a0if you know\u00a0there\u00a0is risk involved?\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A:\u00a0There\u00a0isn\u2019t\u00a0really much\u00a0risk if you know your boundaries. Make sure to check your gear before using it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In conclusion, extreme sports can be highly risky, or alternatively fun hobbies that give people a goal to work towards.
