Whether you saw it on Netflix, passed by a billboard on your way to school, or even just heard about your friends talking about their latest show obsessions, there is a good chance you have heard of the name Stranger Things. But what do you know about the show that started from a discarded project, to one of Netflix’s biggest success?

What actually is Stranger Things?
For those of you who have been living under a rock, Stranger Things is a Netflix Original Show that follows the story of a group of boys in 1980’s Indiana, fighting against supernatural forces centred around Dungeons and Dragons. The show features talented actors such as Winona Ryder, Maya Hawke and Joe Keery, which combines with the brilliant directing skills of the Duffer Brothers to create a cinematic masterpiece. You can expect a wide variety of scenes, from gruesome horror, emotional twists, and heartwarming romance.
Overcoming Issues
While Stranger Things is one of the most popular shows today, it wasn’t always apparent to Netflix. When the Duffer Brothers first pitched their idea to the recruiters, they weren’t happy with the idea of having a show with child actors that wasn’t for children, and thought it was a crazy idea. It took no less than 20 tries for a recruiter to finally accept the concept of Stranger Things and put it into action. Think, if the Duffer Brothers gave up after their first attempt and left their plans to gather dust in an old box, Stranger Things would still be the idea it first was almost 10 years ago!
Why is Stranger Things so Popular?
When the show first aired on Netflix, viewers were touched by the idea that the show revolved around children that weren’t particularly popular and had challenging backgrounds. One of the main reasons I enjoyed the show was that it showcased the reality of being what society called, a “weird kid”. The show takes a deep dive into the lives and behaviours of each of these children to the point where it feels like each season you’re growing up with them.
Another reason why Stranger Things is so popular is because of the time period it’s set in. This show goes all the way back to the 80’s, which the Duffer Brothers captured perfectly with the use of music, clothing and general style. This appealed to the older members of the audience who felt nostalgic watching the show and wanted to reminisce with their childhood experiences. It also proved intriguing for younger viewers who wanted to learn more about the trends and traditions of the 1980s.
The Success of Stranger Things
Not only have the cast won awards for their performance, the show has won numerous awards for their casting, special effects and soundtracks. Just a few of their combined awards include: People’s Choice Awards Show of 2019 and 2022, MTV’s series of the year, and 2018’s Kids Choice Awards Favourite TV Show. In terms of personal awards, Millie Bobby Brown received 16 awards for her role of “Eleven”, including a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance from an ensemble in a Drama Series.

Hopefully, my article has convinced you to turn on your TV and immerse yourself in the stranger-verse.
To finish, I would like to share with you my favourite quote from the show, said by Jonathan Byers, arguably my favourite character.
“Why be normal? Nobody normal ever accomplished anything meaningful in life.”
