Shrek the Musical (Jr)

It was a sunny Saturday evening when I went to watch Shrek the Musical Jr. While it is a film that I have watched many times, Shrek the Musical was something new to me.

The evening began as we were handed programmes and green flags with the word ‘Freak’ on them, promising an interesting night ahead.

The musical was wonderful, with audience interaction, jokes, singing and dancing and an all-round good time.

Fiona, played by the talented Orla Sweeney, sung her way beautifully through the show. At the end, where she was due to (WARNING, SPOILERS!) turn into an ogre for the final time, the quick change went without a hitch and credit must go to the backstage crew with their speed and efficiency.

There was great chemistry between Shrek (played by William Maher) and Donkey (played by Max Knight). The comedic duo kept the story going and really played up to their cinematic counterparts.

Lord Farquaad, played by Jake Dance, also was a notable character. He threw himself into the role playing the small, iconic villain.

The powerful presence of the dragon, played by Sabrinah Warren, was really felt onstage and embellished by her flamboyant costume.

The costumes were really above and beyond in their task of transforming human cast into animals big and small. They were bright, colourful and perfectly chosen to really set the scene.

Whilst talking to one of the cast members, Amanda Rojek, who was a part of the chorus, told me what a lovely experience the whole thing was and how her confidence has improved as a result. She has formed new friendships and strengthened existing ones through the musical.

Do you want to get involved in something like this next year? With a musical due and other performances during the year, there are so many ways to join in.

A tremendous well done to everyone involved, from the outstanding cast to the teachers who made everything happen and the backstage crew who the show would not run smoothly without.
