The Rise in Child Screen Time in the UK

Did you know the average young person aged (5-16) can spend 6.3 hours a day on devices?

That is about half of your day. It is crucial that you are aware of how long you spend on screens as not only can screens be addictive and show harmful content, but can also be damaging to your eyes.

Are devices addictive?

Have you felt the urge to have to pick up your device even when you are doing another activity? Devices can seem addictive because they release dopamine, a good feeling in the brain, which makes users feel proud and happy.

This makes users of screens want to keep using the device again and again; this is a reward system. Screens can provide a sense of connection and belonging, particularly for individuals who may struggle with social interaction in real life.

Repeated screen usage can create habits and routines, making it difficult to break free from the cycle.

How can social media affect you?

Often it is social media that is the biggest draw to people when they are using devices. Social media can have both positive and negative effects on children and can impact their mental health, social development and physical well-being.

Studies show a link between excessive screen time and negative psychological behaviour. Positive parts of social media include increased connectivity, access to information, and opportunities for creative expression.

However, negative impacts can include anxiety, depression, cyber bullying and sleep deprivation. Therefore, we need to put in place precautions that help us to maintain healthy screen habits.

What can I do instead of screen time?

Some ways to reduce your screen time are:

  • Create tech-free zones or times (such as before bed or when you wake up in the morning)
  • Find a non-online hobby (such as reading, knitting or playing an instrument)
  • Enjoy a sport
  • Limit your screen time
  • Engage in crafts
  • Meet friend or family member in person

Screens are not something to be afraid of but we should be aware and try to stay offline.
