Why I chose Bolton School

Have you ever started a new school? If so, why did you choose it?

I recently started Bolton School Girls’ Division; it was a whirlwind of emotions with an infinite list of questions. Would I make friends? Would I fit in? Would I get lost or even end up with a detention? I wondered what form would I be in? Who would my form teacher be? Despite feeling a little scared, I was ready for a new adventure.  I started with a new bucket list, what clubs I’d join, which trips I’d go on and if i would like to join a sports team? The neurons in my brain wouldn’t stop firing.

I didn’t know much about Bolton School, but my uncle, who studied in the Boy’s division, encouraged me to visit. He told me it was as magical as Hogwarts and being the Hermione of my family, made me even more curious to attend a taster day. My family and I thought long and hard, and together we decided to take the big, scary Bolton school exam. Yes, you heard me correctly, I was going to take the exam that could get me into an extremely prestigious school! The pressure was on.

After a few months of preparing, the big day arrived. I was ready. The exam was very challenging, but I persevered and managed to finish it. I also had an interview was with Mrs Sanders, she was very nice and had the kindest smile. After what felt like days, weeks, months and seasons passing,  I received a crisp, white envelope, I opened it and screamed. I was offered a place at Bolton School girls division, I was elated!

My parents and I discussed everything carefully. I thought deeply about this and I came to the conclusion that I would attend Bolton school!

The first few days

Even more days and months had passed at snail speed and soon I had bought my new uniform and stationery. I could barely wait. My mum kept tearing up because I was now “a big girl.” Finally, the day had arrived! I was so happy and excited. That morning, I woke up at 6am and arrived at the coach stop at 7:20 am, filled to the brim with energy. Everyone on my bus was lively, and our coach driver Mr Leo was so kind, they made me feel welcome. I even met another pupil from my old school.

Walking up through the big, black gates, I felt my heart race and my hands shake. Was this the right choice? I felt a shiver down my spine. I was nervous yet ready, knowing deep down, that this was the right fit for me. My ambition is to study at Oxford University, then become a barrister and eventually a judge. The breadth of Bolton School’s opportunities, including the newspaper club, is exactly what I need to grow. My family and I are convinced that I will thrive here, refining my skills and character.

I got lost a few times at first, but I was never afraid to ask, as the teachers and pupils always helped me find my way. I knew that whenever I’d ask I would always receive a smile and an informative answer. Even though there are so many pupils here, I never feel lost in the crowd. I feel comfortable and at home.

After a few months at Bolton School, I joined many clubs including:

  • newspaper club
  • netball club
  • and badminton club.

I have entered competitions, played the piano at parents’ information evening and have been nominated as a school council representative.

What I am looking forward to

Bolton school offers a wide range of activities and clubs, in the future I am looking forward to Patterdale, the Year 7 Concert and trips to the Lowry Theatre to watch the Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe. Although at first I had my doubts about starting at Bolton School, my nerves have completely disappeared and I am glad to say that the only emotion I feel when being at school, is happy.
