The Masked Singer
The Masked Singer is a top-secret celebrity competition where famous contestants compete head-to-head for the golden trophy. Celebrity contestants wear head-to-toe costumes, to hide their identities from the judges and viewers. Celebrities perform in character and the panel of judges will be given clues about their identities through video packages. Judges will then analyse the clues and guess their identity. The ‘masked performer’ with the lowest votes each round is eliminated and has to remove their mask to show their identity. This process is repeated each episode until there is one singer left; the last singer remaining is crowned champion. The weekly viewership in 2026 for Season 7 in the UK was roughly around 2.9 million viewers, while the highest viewership was the very first season with 9.36 million viewers.

Britain’s Got Talent
Britain’s Got Talent is an equally good TV series where a variety of acts and performances have the chance to win £250,000. These acts and performances are displayed in front of a live audience and four judges. Each judge has a red buzzer that they press when they don’t like the performance or don’t think it meets the standards. In the centre of the judges’ table is the Golden Buzzer. When a judge thinks a performer is outstanding, they can press it to send that act straight through to the next round. Other contestants can also progress by receiving enough “yes” votes from the judges. Children have been an integral part of BGT since the show first aired in 2007. The highest viewership BGT achieved was 17.3 million viewers across the broadcast in 2009, while in 2026 the viewership plummeted to 3 to 6 million viewers.
Similarities and Differences
Even though Britain’s Got Talent and the Masked Singer appear to be completely different shows, they also have many similarities. For example, they both are high profile Saturday entertainment shows and they are both produced by ITV. Not to mention, both shows rely on high-energy, flashy performances to capture the attention of the judges. When it comes to differences, The Masked Singer is mystery game show (featuring celebrities), whereas Britain’s Got Talent is a variety competition searching for undiscovered talent from across the UK, no matter the age. As The Masked Singer is less about finding talent and more about mysteries about the celebrity under the mask, Britain’s Got Talent is about more about finding raw talent, rather than finding already known celebrities.
